Dear Melissa:

Happy Sweet 16th Birthday!!!

Melissa, I know you since you were in your mommy's tummy. I have a photo of you when you were about just a few months old. (I was holding you with Uncle Vincent at New Port Beach 15 years ago). Although I have not seen you for more than 10+ years, and you probably don't remember me and Uncle Vincent since your family moved from Rowland Heights to Irvine. I just read your blog today, and saw your grown up photos; you are a beautiful creation, and God had done a very excellent duplication job from 95% look of Michael and Marlene's combination....I am sure that God has HIS copy right! :)

When I knew your illness, I was very shock and my heart is so hurting because I know the life that you are fighting and the pain that you are suffering. We have been praying for you everyday, and you are always in our thoughts. I am sure that your illness will be heal by God's mercy hands, and you will be complete recovered and healthy again.

God is in control, and HE has a special job for your life very soon......One day, you will be stand in front of hundreds of people to glorified God's amazing grace, we are grateful for His love for you and many people will be touched by your faith and story.

Because of your story, many people have come together, pray harder and get more close to God than before (I pray more and harder than before because of you...I am so eager to pray for your life and good health). Our faith, our hope, our love, our prayer, and our heart are always be with you and your family. I always remember your birthday because Uncle Vincent's birthday is April 27th, yours is April 28th, and mine is April 29....What a good connection between us! I am looking forward to celebrate your 17th birthday with Uncle Vincent and me together next year.

May God continue HIS blessings, grace, and healing power on your fully recover. Jesus is love, and HE loves HIS children. Melissa, Jesus is with you for sure and always!

May God comfort and give strength physically and spiritually on your beloved parents-Michael and Marlene, your brother, and you sisters through your every trial.

Happy birthday in everyday and God bless!

Love,
The Chen Family

Dear Melissa,

Happy sweet sixteen! :) It hurts and pains me to hear about how tough it's been for you, and I've been checking for updates constantly. But I know that God is still faithful and His way is still best. It's all for His glory and for our good. Isn't that crazy how He works all things out like that? I've been praying mightily for you, specifically for faith and an utter dependence on God. Cling tight to Him, Melissa, and I know that you will experience Him intimately. Hang in there, keep fighting hard, and your life will be an amazing testimony of God's power and faithfulness. Let's hang out and eat at Macaroni Grill again! Love you!

Dear Melissa,

I was shocked when I heard this news. I was deeply saddened realizing so much suffering you have gone through. I was tearful and disbelief. I asked our Lord 'Why You?’ the beloved child of His. I wanted the answer...

In the past few months, we all have witness the outpouring of those unconditional love and prayer for you and your family, from your neighbors, your friends, and your communities, from many many around the world whom you never met...What could be a better testimonial of how much the Jesus love you and your family..

I believe that you will come out this experience as a stronger and more beautiful Melissa. Remember, we all love you very much. Happy birthday!

Dearest Melissa & The Yu Family,

HAPPY SWEET 16TH BIRTHDAY, MELISSA!

We have never met, however we are part of your Mariners Church family. Though we have never met, I feel an extremely deep connection with you and your family. I check your blog several times a day to here the latest updates on your condition and all the kind words from around the world from well wishers. You are extremely blessed to have such loving, caring and devotional parents, big brother and little sisters. You are also very blessed with an incredible amount of loving friends and extended family. I pray for you several times a day. I also pray for your parents and family for strength, perseverance and wisdom .

I am so proud of you for being so strong and being a fighter that doesn't give up! You will have quite a story to tell when you finally walk out of the hospital!

I picked out a two passages that I thought you and your family would find of comfort.

Kind words are like honey - sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. (Proverbs 16:24)

Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal.
Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind. (Isaiah 58:8)

Melissa, keep on fighting and don't give up! We are here in support of you and your family!

Best Wishes,
The Nishioka Family

Dearest Melissa,

Happy Sweet 16th birthday. As I type this please know my prayers have been with you and your family. I pray that the Lord will wrap you in His loving arms and bring extra Angels to guard and help you to continue to fight, to get stronger & well soon. The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness. Psalm 41:3 & So Moses cried out to the LORD, "O God, please heal her!" Numbers 12:13
Melissa, you and your family have been such a joy to know. It's been a real pleasure to serve with you and your family in the AWANA club at Mariner Church. You are an amazing and wonderful child in Christ. Your servant heart has been so beautiful to watch as you shared His love with the little children in the Cubbies club. We miss you dearly, our Sweet Melissa, we miss your smile, your delightful ways that have brought so much laughter & joy to the children.

You and your family have touched all of our hearts with your courage and faith. And in my heart you all have a very special place. I know that you and your family were all sent as a gift to me from our Beloved Lord. I cannot even begin to tell you how blessed I feel to know all of you and just love you and your wonderful family so dearly. This will result in your being witnesses to them. Luke 21:13

I will keep praying for you & your family, that your faith will remain strong, for peace to be with all of you. I pray that the Doctors will find a way to help you and that the medication they are prescribing will work as they should. I pray the Lord keeps your bodies and mind strong during this hardship. And that through all of this, you and your family are becoming much closer, not only to each other but to our Beloved Lord Jesus. Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. Jeremiah 33:6

Again I wish you a very Happy Sweet 16th Birthday, may your dreams be of Cake, candy & ice-cream, presents & fun and friends & family. May you feel all of our love and the power of our prayers for you & your family.

Love to all of you,

Hi Melissa! You don’t know us yet (we look forward to meeting you when you return to church!) but we hang out with your sister Mildred helping with check-in in kids ministry….she is really good at check-in and such a super nice person! Our birthday wish for you is for your complete recovery – we know God is able to heal you and we look forward to seeing you at church again! Our family is praying for you and your family daily, and we send this note with love and strength for continuing down the path God has chosen for you….sometimes He surprises us with where He takes us, but in hindsight, things make more sense. It is an adventure to follow Jesus; never easy, but so rewarding – he never fails us and never leaves us alone. We were reading John 14 this morning, and I’d like to share it with you. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:1-6. Sending you and your family the peace and love of Jesus that surpasses understanding, Mr. and Mrs. Byk, Tara (age 10, whose birthday is also in May so almost 11) and Hayley (age 14) (and a birthday kiss and tail wag for you from our sweet dog Oliver )

Dear Melissa and the Yu Family:

While we don't know each other personally, I wanted to let you know I've been praying for you. I attend Island ECC in Hong Kong and am part of the prayer team at our church.

I have experienced a myriad of emotions as I read updates on your progress. I will continue to pray that the Lord give the doctors wisdom and clarity as they try to find and heal the culprit that has kept you in the hospital this long.

But, I digress. The point of this email is to wish you a HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY!!!!! While I know the hospital isn't the coolest place to celebrate your birthday, praise God you are surrounded by family and loved ones.

To the Yu Family: May the Lord give you strength - spiritually, physically, and emotionally as you continue to stay by Melissa's side. Your faith has been an encouragement.

Dearest Melissa,

We have yet to meet you, but we have met your father and know you
through him. We are awaiting the day when we will meet you and give
you a hug and a huge birthday cake with candles burning brightly,
ready for you to blow out and make your wish.

We can remember when our daughter turned 16. All she could think
about was getting her driver's license....so our prayer is that soon
you will be at the Department of MotorVehicles filling out the forms
and taking the test, ready to drive!

In the meantime, our prayers are surrounding you each and everyday.
You have touched our lives with your strength and tenacity. Your
amazing story will one day reach the lives of many others around the
world, whose faith will be fortified because of your faith and the
faith and trust of your father and mother. You can hear these words
as they are read to you, but know that they are more than words.
This is an e-mail filled with love and prayers that you feel the Lords
gentle hand holding your hand and the power of the prayers of His
people, who love you dearly.

It is with our deepest love that we send you this
greeting.....awaiting the day you walk out of the hospital to
celebrate life with all those you love and who love you.

Christ, who is our savior and Lord, holds you in His hands! Wow! How
awesome is that!
And we are grateful for His love for you and the healing power of His
hand.

Today is also my birthday......so I share the day with a very special
young lady. When I blow out my candles, my wish.....and prayer, will
be for you... and that you, like me, will be celebrating your 60th
birthday in great health!

With love beyonds words....

Melissa,
When I talk about you, I refer to you as Sweet Melissa...have I ever told you that? You have just the sweetest heart. One of the things I admire about you is that you are gentle in your interaction and love for others and yet you are strong and intelligent and driven. Those qualities are hard to balance, but it comes so naturally for you - and I really admire that. Anyone who meets you instantly loves you - including me. Even though you gained instant credibility being "Maurice's little sister," you didn't stay in his shadow for long because you bring so much to the table yourself. You're a fighter. Anyone who's a runner is a fighter - and you especially. When I was coaching track, I'd say - the moment you think to yourself, "I'm too tired," that's when you've really gotta push. That's who you are and I know that's what you're doing. You're running hard, you're endurinng...and I can't wait to give you the hugest hug the next time I see you. I love you so much and I miss your sweet face. My friends and I are all praying for you.

Happy Sweet 16, Sweet Melissa!

Dear Melissa,

Greetings from Hong Kong from the Hwangs. How are you? Happy Sweet 16!

Here's a birthday joke for you:
A man asked his wife, "What would you most like for your birthday?" She said, "I'd love to be ten again."
On the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and off they went to a theme park. He put her on every ride in the park, the Death Slide, The Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear. Everything there was, she had a go.
She staggered out of the theme park five hours later, her head reeling and her stomach upside down. Into McDonald's they went, where she was given a Double Big Mac with extra fries and a strawberry shake. Then off to a movie theater, more burgers, popcorn, cola and sweets. At last she staggered home with her husband and collapsed into bed.
Her husband leaned over and asked, "Well, dear, what was it like being ten again?"
One eye opened and she groaned, "Actually I meant dress size."

Haha! Anyway, we hope you're feeling a bit better. Our family and our churches here are all fighting with you and praying for you to recover soon, so take care and happy happy birthday!

Blessings on this special day,
The Hwang family

Dear Melissa,

God bless you on your special day!

This note is from Kevin and Mary Rooney and also Doris Freitag. We had a fantastic Christmas
dinner with your parents at the Zion Chinese
Christmas dinner.

We think so much of your parents. God has blessed you in so many ways, with fantastic parents and keeping you alive through this very difficult time.

My dad died on July 9, 2006. He was the pastor at Zion when he passed away. I know your parents remember him. He taught us to love all people, as Jesus would have. We feel so blessed to know the Chinese at Zion, and also your parents.

We pray you have a very blessed birthday. Happy 16th! Yes, this is the day to thank our heavenly Father for the abundance of His gracious blessings through your illness.

We have joined the many people and members , who have prayed to God in asking Him, in fervent prayers, for His gracious healing for you, Melissa.

We ask that the Lord holds his hands of healing power over you. We pray that His continued blessings assure you of a quick recovery, knowing that: The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want, I am never in need. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the path of righteousness. Even as I move though the dark valleys of death. I will not fear evil. Thou art with me, and always will be with me.

We pray that you receive this and feel the love coming from us. Our prayers are always with you.

Melissa, you are a miracle. All the stress and hardships that you
have faced in the last 101 days is something a 16 year old girl
should never have to go through. And although there is much more
fighting to go, today is a celebration, not only because it's your
birthday, but because you have lasted 101 days. You have fought this
far, you have accomplished so much. Although we can't see you,
although you aren't awake, you are in each of our hearts, prayers and
thoughts. You are truly amazing. You are a fighter, you will get
through this. God is with you, he is always with you, never let go,
Melissa, you have comes so far...finish the race, no matter how long
the race is. Keep strong, keep faith, and remember we love you so
much. And yes, this isn't the typical 16th birthday, but resting and

HI Melissa,

Dear Melissa,

You don't know me, but my 2 older boys are at Uni, a freshman, Collin Tabor, and a sophomore, Austin Tabor. I have been following along with your journey and praying some very BIG prayers for you. I visited a little boy at CHOC that was 2 doors down from you, and I saw your room filled with people that love and care for you so much. I loved looking at the pictures on your door - you have such a happy smile and seem to be a girl so full of life. You will once again laugh with friends, dance with boys, and run like the wind... just hang in there and get well. I pray for comfort and peace for you, Melissa, and complete and total healing. In your darkest moments, don't ever let go of Jesus and the fact that our Lord is always in control. Hold my faavorite verse close in your heart: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer 29:11. I hope to meet you someday very soon. Be brave, sweet girl!

OH! and one more thing... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MELISSA! You are so going to LOVE driving - FUN FREEDOM!

Melissa,

Happy 16th birthday, I know your father better than I know you, but you are our princess at all times.

My name is Cindy Eng, and everyone call me Auntie Cindy, I would like for you to get up, get well really soon and come to our church at El Monte to call me Auntie Cindy. You also need to get up not only for your parent and your brothers and sister, you have the California driver license test to take, SAT, High School Prom, graduation, and college ahead of you. Think about that exciting college life, go away from home and be independent. I know you are a surviver, a fighter, nothing can stand on your way, you know why? Because you have God in your life.

Melissa, happy birthday,
we all want to see you smile and hear your voice again soon.
How about that dollar taco, and the fresh air by the beach, I will be waiting for you to call on me. We can both enjoy the taco and fresh air together.

Love Auntie Cindy

Dear Melissa,

Happy 16th Birthday!

Though I do not know you, and vice versa, you have been in my prayers and in my thoughts, as well as your family. Hearing about what you've been through in the last several weeks has touched me deeply, and my prayers are truly with you. I'm encouraged to hear of your progress, and I hope that our God, who is your Maker, could fashion so much strength in you, that you would wake up and praise Him for being the miracle-giver! You are a living testimony of God's mighty and miraculous ways, and my prayer for you is that God would vindicate the prayers of so many, to raise you up in victory. When I think of you, the word "vindicate" certainly crosses my mind. Because there is truly a body of saints praying that God would not turn a deaf ear to the prayers of so many people who are asking for a miracle.

Melissa, on your birthday, I hope that even in your sleep, you realize that you are not alone. You are a special girl, and I hope to one day meet you in person. I'm very much touched by your ordeal, and more than that, hopeful that God can turn mourning into dancing, sorrow into laughter, despair into true hope.

Happy Birthday Melissa, the one of many, many more to come!

Blessings to you,

Anne

Birthday Message from Melissa's Dad

Day 39 in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Children’s Hospital of Orange County

Dear Friends,

I am so thankful for your faithful prayers, love and support for Melissa and the Yu family. Without your continuous prayer, it would be impossible for us to face so many trials. Since the first day Melissa developed a fever on January 19, 101 days have past. Melissa has accumulated 62 days in intensive care, has suffered two aneurisms, four major brain surgeries, two additional surgeries including a ventricleostomy and tracheotomy; she has suffered from high heart beat rate, up to 172 beats per minute, high brain pressure (an internal cranial pressure [ICP] of 33), brain swelling, pneumonia, seizures, and high fever (104.3 F).

Today, April 28, is Melissa’s 16th birthday. Even though she is still in an induced coma, if you want to send any blessing words or encouragement on this important birthday, you are welcome to do so. We can read her email to her when, according to the doctors' plan she will be allowed to awaken. We will let her know how much God loves her through the support of our now numerous friends.

Please send Birthday email to CHOC patientemails@chochospital.org attention Melissa Yu PICU 616. Please email a copy to Michael Yu at 2michaelyu@gmail.com and Paul Bogenrief at mrb@marinerschurch.org. “Mr. B" will post all your email to Melissa's Blog created by her Mariners Church high school small group leader, Jana Harrelson.

We deeply appreciate your action in love. May God bless you abundantly with His unlimited love, and the Spirit anoint you with infinite power, and the Lord Jesus Christ’s endless mercy be with you.

Thank you.

In Him and In Love,

Michael

Happy Sweet 16, Melissa

Dear Friends,

This day in 1992, Melissa was delivered into the world of the Yu family as the second American Born Chinese: Maurice being the first. There is a whole sub-cultural stereo typical thing about ABC's that could be a discussion for another time. Suffice it to say that the kids speak Chinese at home to their parents and English at all other times. Though Mildred understands her parents speaking to her in Chinese and she answers them in English.

Today will not be the usual birthday celebration around the neighborhood pool with friends, families, balloons, presents and the traditional mix of Chinese dumplings, Kentucky chicken, tea, sodas and chips.

Last I wrote, the doctors had let Melissa come out of the coma because she simply refused to keep her eyes closed and her hand down. Well, that didn't work. Melissa spent the next two days with a high fever, having constant seizures and in a great deal of pain. With tears in his eyes, Michael said it was so hard helping the nurses lift her off the bed and onto the CT Scan. The jostling caused her so much pain.

Not finding the source of the pain or the fever, last Thursday the neurologist and neuro-surgeon decided that Melissa simply must be put into a deep coma and a muscle paralyzed state. The blinds on the windows have been closed, and Michael and Marlene have been forbidden from the room so that Melissa have no stimulus for the next few days. Her body and brain are simply too fragile, and need time. Yet, all the vital signs (heart, blood pressure, and even now body temperature) seem to be within a good range.

Though forbidden from her room, Micheal and Marlene are at every doctors consult, and are now intricately versed in things pediatric heart and neuro, reading monitors and spotting drug interactions. The cafeteria cashier offers Marlene a staff discount for her frequency.

Church friends have coordinated evening meals throughout the week, the frig is full, and neighbors deliver sack lunches in the mornings for the kids to take to school.

Most cherished of all are the prayers that each of you continue to offer for Melissa's recovery. Micheal and Marlene hang on every word, squeezing every extra ounce of strength from the replies that you send. With all their heart, and a smile on their face, they will tell you that Melissa will be whole again and return to them full of life as she was before.

Though monitors and tubes replace balloons and picnics today, sweet Melissa stubbornly refuses to give up her sixteen years. Alone in her room, she is fighting a good fight to come back to her family and friends.

Thank you for your continued prayers for Melissa.

David Hosmer

Happy Sweet 16 Melissa!

India Orphanage Praying for Melissa!

Melissa's dad, Michael, sent me a note this afternoon with this incredible news:

Dear Mr. B,

I received an e-mail from good friend of mine, Daivd Matsuura, who is former State Senator of Hawaii. His friend, Ashish Pradhan, has an orphanage in India and has told David that all the kids at the orphanage are praying for Melissa.

Thank you for your support, and walk with us together through this most tough in our life, I strong believe that end up we all will experience the power of Living God, and the miracle in Melissa`s life.

God bless.
Michael

Message from Ashish Pradahn to David Matsurra:

Dear Brother,

I know it has been a tough time for Melissa and for everyone. God is in total control no matter how thick the darkness is. Know for sure that we are continually praying for you, and we are very much in partnership with you in all this. Thank you for updating the children ... they are very keen to hear about her.

Ashish

April 24, 10:30 p.m.

Dear Family and Friends,

Current updates as of 10:30 p.m.:

1. Because of the elevated fever of 104 for the past 3 days, the doctors decided to place Melissa in an induced coma until Monday or Tuesday.

2. All culture studies came back negative so the doctors can't seem to identify the problem(s) that are causing the fever.

3. Tylenol will reduce fever but constant intake of tylenol will negatively affect the liver. On the other hand, Motrin or asprin will thin the blood.

4. The room is now in a controlled environment of 37 celcius or 98.6 F. Perhaps Melissa's body is having a difficult time adjusting to normal temperature.

5. Blood drain is still reddish. Still need to see yellow in order to conclude that the bleeding has stopped.

6. The traech area started to bleed today. It stopped for 3 days prior but started to bleed again today. Haven't heard from the doctors yet how to stop this bleeding whether naturally or otherwise.

7. Heart beat is around 130. This can be caused by the elevated fever or the anti-seizure medication.

Prayer Requests:

1. Pray for strength. Marlene and Michael are physically and emotionally exhausted.

2. Pray that the immediate family unit will grow closer.

3. Pray for upbeat spirit.

Thanks,
Steve

Melissa and your family are in our thoughts and hearts. I am a University High School teacher, and Melissa is not now nor has been my student, yet I hear positive comments about her. I was sick last year, very ill, was told I might not make it, and here I am, nine months later, working full time, back in the swing of things. I believe in miracles. Keep your faith and know we are all thinking of her now, and we are a big community!!!

Dear Friends,

Some updates from Marlene:

1. The blood drain is still reddish. Dark red would suggest old blood. Lighter red suggests new blood. We need to see yellow fluid. This will indicate the bleeding has stopped.

2. New pick line on her left leg. This is done to prevent the old pick line from becoming infected.

3. The doctors have put Melissa in a deep sleep today and tomorrow. This will enable the doctors to examine and observe her. At the same time, it will allow her brain to rest.

4. The traecheotomy area is free of bleeding. Praise God!! The Nova 7 worked and the bleeding has stopped which means bacteria will not infect that area.

5. Heart rate is still at about 130, which is way too high. It needs to be down to 105 to 110 range.

6. Melissa had a fever of 104 for most of the day Thursday. Don't know what the cause is but doctors are evaluating and testing.

7. The anti-seizure medication is causing low blood pressure. Pray that the seizures would stop which will eliminate the need for the anti-seizure medication and her blood pressure can be back to normal.

8. More importantly, pray that the wounded area in her brain would heal because it's having a difficult time tolerating new blood. This is a primary reason for the blood draining to continue.

Don't forget that God is all powerful and can perform miracles beyond any of our human comprehension. We must continue to pray for strengthen faith and believe God's sovereignty.

Thanks,
Steve Chang

Prayer For the Yu Family

Dear Lord,

I cannot even begin to imagine the anguish, heartbreak and desire in Michael and Marlene's heart for their beloved daughter to be made whole again. All I can ask is that You will comfort them; that you will enlarge their vision to see their current situation in the context of heaven and eternity. I cannot fathom the purpose of this except to see Your own parent-heart fighting and never giving up for every beloved child of yours who is at Death's door; the anguish and pain in your own heart for your children because of your immense love for us just like Marlene and Michael's immense love for Melissa. As they are not giving up, so You have never given up. Lord, I ask for your best will for this beloved family. I thank you that they are eternally secure in you and that, should Melissa leave them at this time, because of You, they are not eternally separated. As heartbreaking as it is, we have an eternal hope and an eternity together. Unlike those whom You anguish over, whom, once lost, will be eternally separated from You. Let your peace wash over the whole family at this time and work your best will in Melissa's life. In Christ's name, Amen.

Help with Meals

4/21/08
Dear Friends and family,

Thanks to everyone for praying for Melissa, her parents - Michael and Marlene and her siblings - Maurice, Melodie and Mildred. Your response to their request for prayer and desire to help in any way you can has been overwhelming and very welcoming! Thank you. Here's some updates and responses to some of the questions being asked.

- As far as contacting the Yus, feel free to send notes to their home (address listed below) or to my home at 21 Springflower, Irvine, CA 92614 or via email to me. It's difficult for Marlene to get to the computer and in fact, she hasn't seen her computer in 3 weeks. I offered to receive and make copies of every email for her and she loved the idea of having a personal secretary. Please know that I am happy to deliver all messages.

- Marlene has asked for prayer on her behalf as she will be talking with her supervisor about changing from a full-time status to part-time. She's almost taken all of her leave and while she desires to stay at Melissa's bedside 24-7 she knows she must return to work to maintain their family medical benefits -- especially now.

- Many have asked how they can assist the family. Meals are being provided 3x's a week thru EFU Church of Irvine, which is Marlene's church that she was baptized in during her youth. They only want meals on M, W & F so they don't have too much and as Marlene put it, "there are people all over our country that are starving and could use meals". They remain generous, kind and thinking of others even during this difficult time in their lives. Meals have been provided thru May 2; however, Elder Joe just released May's calendar. It's simple and easy to navigate (see below). It was just recently mentioned that Michael has been rushing home each morning to prepare sack lunches for the 4 children and this could be another resource that we could provide. Their neighbor and friend, Kathy Curtis, talked with Melodie today and got their "likes and dislikes" so she could start making lunches tomorrow morning (thank you) ... I'll get back to you once we've developed a plan or schedule for this need. Gift cards to local restaurants and fast food are also welcome for those "on the go" days and when meals aren't being provided.

- Their financial needs are great since Michael works for the Lord and serves as a Pastor and missionary (when not tending to his family needs) and Marlene has been on leave (without pay) from her full-time job. There are two ways you can contribute financially : 1) through Michael's ministry (AFF)or 2) make a check payable to Marlene Yu and mail to my home at 21 Springflower, Irvine 92614. I am maintaining a log of all resources on their behalf Send checks to:
Asia Fellowship Foundation
PO Box 6207
Irvine, CA 92616
On check memo line: "Michael Yu Living Expense"

Thank you for your continuing support on behalf of the Yu Family.

Best regards,
Robin Robinson

FROM MR. B

Sunday, April 20, Information from Melissa's Uncle Steve on events of Sunday:

Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Melissa suffered abnormal bleeding at the tracheotomy site. Around 10:00 a.m., doctors performed a surgical procedure to determine the cause of the bleeding. They could not determine the cause, so they injected Nova 7 to stop the bleeding. This is her second shot of Nova 7. The first one was on March 21 when Melissa first went into the hospital with the first aneurism. Around 5:40 p.m., while the nurse was sucking the phlegm out of her mouth, Melissa appeared to have her eyes fixated towards the ceiling (slightly between the ceiling and the wall). She is now laying on her back with a slight tilt of the head. What she was staring at was a reflection of herself. Melissa saw herself for the first time and started to cry. Sheue-Ling was able to distract her and was actually able to make her smile … 3 times as a matter of fact. This was very positive at least to see her muscle strength improve. Around 6:00 p.m. Michael’s brother visited. Melissa was able to extend her left hand as to shake hands. Around 8:30 p.m., Melissa indicated she was in severe pain and grabbed onto Marlene and Michael's hands. One on either side of her. Her right hand appears to have some strength as well as her right leg. As of now the cause of the pain isn’t known, but her heart rate, 150-160 does indicate she is suffering.

Prayer Items:

1. Initial 3 days after tracheotomy will be very uncomfortable and irritating. Pray for smooth adjustments and removal of irritations.

2. Cough to normalize.

Melissa is by no means out of the woods. What's encouraging is that Melissa is able to respond to certain commands and appears to be alert. These are all good signs, but they are not consistent.

Let's continue to pray for substantive recovery benchmarks. Most important of all, remember that God is in control.

Update from Robin

Here's the latest update from the Yu family on Melissa's condition. Thank you so much for all your prayers and support - the family really appreciates it!

As I mentioned earlier, there are several ways you can assist in helping, if you are able.

Pray, pray, pray for Melissa, for the parents for renewed strength, faith, courage and REST (I spent a few minutes with Marlene on Wed evening - her spirits were amazing, she is a beautiful woman inside and out!); for her siblings: Maurice, Melody and Mildred that they will remain strong and understanding.
Meals - food is being arranged for 3 days a week through a local church; food is supplied through May 2, if you would like to be added to the list, please let me know. Fast food or restaurant gift cards are another way that you could help. They like both Chinese and American food and Marlene mentioned In-N-Out, Taco Bell, KFC, etc.
Financial support - You can write a check payable to Marlene Yu and mail to my home: 21 Springflower, Irvine, CA 92614 or I learned today that you can contribute through Michael's ministry for their living expenses. Here's that information:

Send checks to:
Asia Fellowship Foundation
PO Box 6207
Irvine, CA 92616
On check memo line: 'Michael Yu Living Expense'
God is good and we praise and thank him for all that he has provided for so far and all that he is doing. I thank you for caring and praying.

Thank you,
Robin

Sunday, April 20 - Further Update

Update from Mr. B: Good news. The doctors were able to stop Melissa's bleeding this morning by using something called Nova 7. Erin tells me they called it a "life-saving shot."

Sunday, April 20 10:30 a.m.

Update from Mr. B:

I received the following message today from Melissa's dad, Michael:

The family asks you to pray for Melissa again. At 10:00 this morning she went into surgery to try to stop bleeding at her tracheotomy area. The cause of the bleeding is unknown. Yesterday, her tracheotomy surgery went well, but she developed minor bleeding, then developed bad coughing this morning, then non stop bleeding.

Please pray:
1. That all bleeding will stop.
2. That the surgery goes smooth and successfully.
3. The doctor has wisdom to find out the cause and do the best procedure.
4. Her recovery from her 4th brain surgery and tracheotomy will proceed without more problems.
5. Her future rehab.
6. That the re-attachment of her skull will go smoothly and without complication.
7. That her future heart valve replacement surgery will be without complication.
8. Her heart size will return to normal.
9. Her heart beat remains under control, no any further change.

The Yu family thanks you all for your continued prayers for Melissa's recovery!

Saturday, April 19

Posting from Mr. B: Yesterday I finally had the opportunity to visit Michael, Marlene and Melissa at CHOC. Melissa was sleeping most of the time I was there, but when I arrived, Marlene leaned over and whispered to her that I was there. For just a brief moment, Melissa opened her eyes about half way, looked in my direction, then went back to sleep. I don't know whether she recognized me or even saw me, but the fact that she reacted to Marlene is a good sign. Melissa's room is nice and bright ... full of tubes, wires, monitors, equipment and loving family members. Melissa still has a blue covering over part of her skull which was removed to relieve her brain pressure. While I was there she was receiving some acupuncture treatments and I noticed that she was moving one foot.

Today Melissa will have a tracheotomy performed and will finally have the breating tubes removed from her mouth. They will connect the ventilator to her lower throat. What remains to be done is to have the portion of her skull put back in place and then to move her to a rehabilitation facility where she can begin the long journey back to functionality. She will still need to have a heart valve replacement because one of her valves is leaking due to the bacterial infection she suffered.

I ended the visit praying with the family and joking with Marlene that I was looking forward to arm wrestling Melissa and to walking her around the rehab facility to help her regain her strength.

Even More Updated Friday, April 18

Friday, April 18

On Saturday, April 12, Melissa was showing improvement in her eye focus and movement. She was able to follow the people near her bed with her eyes. This is a positive improvement because up to this point she had been mostly only able to stare in one direction.

Melissa definitely recognizes her family members. She would hold their hands so tightly for a long period of time, as if she doesn't want to let them go. When she saw her dad, she would mouth, “Ba-Ba” and she would reach out to him when undergoing uncomfortable medical procedures.

After church on Sunday, April 13, the three girls, sisters Mildred and Melodie and family friend, Erin Tsai, visited Melissa. It was a wonderful afternoon. Melissa was awake most of the afternoon and was able to breathe on her own for up to two hours at a time. Little sister, Mildred, played nurse, wiping Melissa’s forehead with a wet washcloth. The girls took turns talking to her, saying hello from friends and telling her that they loved her and wanted her home soon.

Melissa had a bad night on Monday. Although she was very alert, it appeared that she was trying to communicate that she was in pain. A CT scan confirmed Melissa had an accumulation of blood and fluid in her brain. At around 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the doctor put a small hole in her right brain to help drain out the blood and fluid. The doctors believe the bleeding was caused by the bacterial infection with which she was originally hospitalized in the fall and is still fighting.

Melissa survived this fourth surgery and the most recent brain scan shows no more bleeding in her brain. The next 2 weeks remain highly critical. The doctors will closely monitor her ICP (brain pressure) and blood pressure, which both can go up each time she coughs.

Melissa’s eyes are still following movement of people in her room, and she has signaled for Marlene to touch her and holds on to her hands. We don't really know what all this means, but let's keep our faith up.

Melissa is scheduled to have a new ventilation tube installed in her throat. The doctors and her parents have decided not to wait any longer. The hole will be small, and the risk of infection under the care of medical staff is smaller than facing the possibility of losing her voice. Let's pray about the new air tube and that her lung to be strengthened and hopefully we can begin to see positive turns.

Things are going so well that Michael and Marlene’s attitude can best be described as ecstatic.

After her most recent surgery, Melissa refused to go into the induced coma. They couldn’t give her enough medication to keep her eyes closed. So, the neurosurgeon decided to bring her out of the coma five days early. Her eyes are now open. She is alert and communicative, without being able to talk due to the tubes in her mouth.

After being home with the other kids Thursday afternoon, Michael arrived at the hospital about 6:00 o'clock. When he came into the room he looked for her hand to talk to her. He could not find her hand right away due to all the sheets & blankets. Knowing this, Melissa raised her hand, gave it to her father and squeezed his hand.

Earlier in the afternoon, Marlene and two nurses were cleaning Melissa. The nurse had a suction wand cleaning her mouth. Melissa reached her hand up to the wand. The nurse asked Melissa whether she wanted to do it herself. She took the wand in hand, pointed it to her mouth, cleaned the left side, then moved it to the right side of her mouth and cleaned there too.

She is only two days out of major brain surgery, and has achieved great benchmarks for her condition. If all continues to progress, the doctors may let her start physical therapy next week.

Thursday evening, Michael and Marlene were sitting together, talking and laughing like young love birds. They were relaxed and rested. Their daughter was coming back. Their spirits were renewed, refreshed and high. We talked of the future when Melissa will be able to go to the churches and say "Thank you," to those who have prayed for her.

While this Journey has taken a wonderful step forward, there are many yet to come. Please continue to pray for the Yu family.

Thank you. Michael and Marlene are so grateful to all of you who continue to pray for them.

It is difficult to comprehend the hard work that lies ahead for the Yu family and for Melissa as she starts down the road to recovery. Patients who suffer such brain trauma have to go through a lot to get back to normal. However, this is not just any patient. It is Melissa … a daughter, a sister, a friend, a teammate, a servant of Jesus … a young woman who is loved by everyone who knows her.

While you pray for Melissa's complete recovery, do also pray for Michael, Marlene, Maurice, Melodie, Mildred and Erin. The hardest work is just about to begin for all of them.

Cards and get well wishes: Please keep your cards, letters, e-mails, PowerPoint slides, JPEG files, etc. coming. I have been asked to visit Melissa this afternoon. I will take all the cards and letters I’ve received this week to her.

After church on Sunday the three girls, sisters Mildred and Melodie and family friend, Erin Tsai, went to the hospital. It was such a good afternoon. Melissa was awake, mostly. Her ventilator was allowing her to breathe on her own. And, little sister, Mildred, played nurse, wiping her forehead with a wet washcloth. The girls took turns talking to her, saying hello from friends and telling her that they loved her and wanted her home soon.

But Melissa had a bad night last night. Although she was very alert, it appeared that she was trying to communicate that she was in pain. A brain scan confirmed that yet another artery was leaking into the brain. It will be another two - three hours in neurosurgery (the fourth since her first aneurism) before we’ll know any more. Pray for Michael and Marlene. They look exhausted, as if they are in shock.

The family asks your immediate prayers this Tuesday afternoon.

Friday, April 11

On Tuesday, Melissa was transferred from Mission Viejo to the 6th floor ICU unit at Children’s Hospital in Orange. This is more convenient for the doctors who have been treating her, as they are all located at the Orange facility, and because it is the main Children’s Hospital location, it gives her better access to the care she needs.

Melissa is responding to Marlene by holding and releasing Marlene’s hand. She is now able to answer Marlene’s questions by blinking her eyes. She still has a low grade fever of unknown origin of between 99° and 100°. Her white blood cell count is down significantly from 2300 to 1400 which is a good sign. Her doctors are still concerned because they have not been able to fully control the bacterial infection in her heart.

Melissa still needs the help of a ventilator to breathe. The doctors are hoping to be able to remove her from the ventilator soon because the irritation from the tubes down her throat can cause inflammation. Also, the sooner she is off the ventilator, the sooner she will be able to leave ICU and begin therapy. Marlene has asked for your prayers that Melissa will be able to breathe on her own. If she isn’t able to do that soon, the doctors will have to perform a tracheotomy, cutting a hole in her throat to insert another breathing tube.

Cards and get well wishes: I delivered another package of cards, letters and posters to the family on Sunday. Thank you to all of you who have given these to me. If you haven’t yet done so, or want to send more, you can still deliver get well wishes to me by e-mail, in person or by mail and I will get them to the family. You can send them in any format.

Though the odds of surviving an aneurysm are not great, Melissa has done just that. No one knows how long her recovery will take or if the aneurysm did any permanent damage, but she is showing good progress and so far the signs are favorable for her recovery.

On Tuesday her brain pressure had stabilized enough for the doctors to remove her brain pressure and oxygen monitors. By the end of this week she has shown movement in both legs and hands, better on the left side than on the right, and she seems to be able to focus her eyes. Marlene stood on her right side and said, "Melissa this is mommy. Can you look at me?" Slowly, Melissa turned her head to the right and focused her eyes on Marlene. The nurses also think that she actually used her hand face up and her finger in a trigger type motion to call them. This is amazing progress considering it’s only been twelve days since the aneurysm.

The pneumonia has almost disappeared (right lung is still clouded, though the left lung is clear) and the her fever, which had been as high as 104° on Wednesday, has also been reduced. The cause of the fever is not known. Melissa’s heart seems to have returned to a nearly normal size and rhythm. The blood in her urine was caused by one of the antibiotics we now know. Her white blood count is pretty high which means that her body is fighting some infection, but it isn’t clear what it is.

Melissa will spend the next week in ICU before being transferred to physical therapy.

After school Michael brings sisters, Melodie and Mildred, to the hospital to do their homework in Melissa's ICU room. Big brother, Maurice, rides his motorcycle to the hospital when he is not in lacrosse practice. Marlene's spirit has returned, as she is again laughing at Michael's humor.

Though there is a long way to go, we all praise God for the tremendous progress Melissa has made.

Cards, etc: Thursday morning I presented a large package of get well cards, letters, drawings, posters, audio/video files on DVD, encouraging e-mail messages, and a ceramic cross to a family friend to deliver to Melissa and her family. It was pretty emotional. Please keep your cards and letters coming. I can accept them electronically in almost any format, so if you prefer, you can e-mail them to me, so you don’t actually have to go to the store to buy them.

Melissa is a real trooper. After three brain surgeries last weekend, the neurosurgeon told the Yu family that he had done all he could do. Melissa left the third surgery on Sunday morning with a brain pressure of 35, and things were looking grim. The family was gathered at the hospital expecting the worst. Though she’s not out of the woods by any means, she is showing improvement. Every day last week the pressure reading went down until it reached 7 on Saturday … well within normal range. If it remains low, and stabilizes, the doctors may begin reducing her medications to slowly allow her to wake up on her own. This could occur as early as this week. Recovery is likely to be a long road for her, though.

Both Michael and Marlene are staying in the parents room at the hospital. Every night Michael goes into the ICU room and sings quietly under his breath so as not to disturb Melissa. Although in an induced coma, she recognizes her parents voices, becomes roused and her brain pressure increases. However, as Michael sings, the brain pressure seems to ease. In addition, on Saturday, Melissa opened her eyelids about a third of the way. Michael raced to get Marlene. They could see her eyes moving. This must be one tough little girl fighting her way back. The nurses increased the medication and she slipped back into the coma so as to be able to rest the brain.

As you can imagine this is a strenuous time for the family. They ask for your continued prayers for Melissa. As Michael has said, “Don’t stop peddling!”

Yesterday, Saturday, was a relatively good day. The pressure on Melissa's brain continues to improve. Her father, Michael, prayed to see "7" and God answered. The range Saturday was between 7 and the low 20s (10 is normal). In the next couple of days, if the pressure remains stable, the neurosurgeon is going to modify her medications to bring her from a heavy sleep to a lighter sleep. This will allow Melissa to gradually wake up on her own. She has been in an induced coma since last Sunday. The oxygen levels in her brain have also improved. Marlene, her mom, noticed that one eye twitched as well as one of her legs.

On the negative side, Melissa has now developed pneumonia … not too unusual for someone in a coma. We don’t yet know how serious this is.

Melissa’s doctors have decided to keep her in a medically induced coma (i.e., keep her in an unconscious state) for longer than the 3 days that had originally been planned. This will mean her brain will have a longer time to recover, but will also probably mean a longer hospital stay and a longer time in rehabilitation.

Several weeks ago Crew member Melissa Yu (15) was hospitalized with a serious heart infection (endocarditis). She was released from the hospital over the weekend of March 15-16. She spent the next week at home and seemed to be getting better. But at the end of the week she was rushed back to the hospital with a burst blood vessel in her brain (an aneurism). She had brain surgery to correct the problem, then over the weekend had to have two more surgeries on her brain to relieve abnormal brain pressure. She was put into an induced coma to rest her brain and will remain in that state for several days before they will allow her to wake up. Last night her mom and dad visited her room and spoke softly to her and stroked her arm. A tear fell from one of her eyes, possibly meaning that she understood that they were there. Melissa’s mom has asked that no one visit her until they let us know that she can receive visitors.

What You Can Do

1. PRAY OFTEN AND HARD for Melissa, her doctors and hospital staff, her family, Michael (Dad), Marlene (Mom), big brother Maurice (17), sisters Melodie (13) and Mildred (9), and family friend Erin Tsai (16). Melodie and Erin are Crew members; Mildred is a KIXs member. Even though Melissa is not conscious, I’m certain she will feel the power of your prayers for her and her family. Prayer can work miracles!

2. SEND GET WELL CARDS TO ME and I will get them to the family. Even if you don’t know Melissa, let’s show her and her family that the Crew family is behind them and are praying for them all. Send your cards to:

Paul “Mr. B” Bogenrief
Mariners Church
5001 Newport Coast Dr.
Irvine, CA 92603

3. SUPPORT Maurice, Melodie, Mildred and Erin when you see them, by letting them know that you’re praying for Melissa and for them.

I will keep you updated as I hear more.
